Our cottages are situated in a quiet location, mainly unchanged for over 150 years. The area is one of North Devon’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the cottages and the village have fine examples of traditional Devon buildings. Footpaths are leading straight from the cottages enabling easy walking without needing to travel or go down roads.
The surrounding area is extremely beautiful and has something to offer all year round. In spring you’ll have an abundance of wild flowers, in summer you can go swimming or surfing and early autumn is often sunny and clear to give you spectacular views of the coastline. In winter the clear days can provide stunning views and the night skies are breath-taking.
Welcombe Mouth with its cliffs, waterfall, rock pools, sand and surf is our nearest cove just half a mile away. We are very close to the South West Coastal Path and provide itineraries for local walks based on Mead Barns, through wooded valleys and countryside, along typical Devon lanes or along strenuous, but beautiful cliff paths. For your convenience we also supply local OS maps in each cottage.
Welcombe has a rich history, first mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The area has a colourful past filled with pirates and smugglers through to the famous Vicar, Robert Hawker, the creator of the harvest festival.
The area has attracted artists of all kinds through the years and there are many historical places of interest. This influence is still present today and the village has a number of excellent artists and artisans, many of whom once visited and have now fulfilled their dream by coming back and live here.
There are a wide range of activities locally for all age groups and budgets. You can relax by the beach or in the rolling countryside and if you want something more active you can enjoy many sports surfing, riding, cycling and golf. For children we have perfect beaches to enjoy without breaking the bank or for special treats there are a number of amusement parks and activities to keep them entertained whatever the weather.
